In Yet Another Deed

Cripes, Suzette has the Word of the Day thingie in her sidebar. My vocabulary is already sufficiently broad, diverse and eclectic, and today's word is nothing special, but the bonus quote is downright important.

Too many parents make life hard for their children by trying, too zealously, to make it easy for them. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, poet, dramatist, novelist, and philosopher (1749-1832)

This statement alone is sufficient to justify Chicago having named a street in his honor which the bus drivers can't pronounce.

I put that Word.A.Day. feature onto my first blog*spot site in 2001 and I left it behind when I moved around to other hosts. One nostalgic day when I checked in there, I found the word had been faithfully appearing day after day, unread and only for it's own sake. That touched me so I moved it over to my current location.

The bonus quote is often more interesting that the featured word or the usage examples.

Well, it hasn't remained completely unread. I've had occasional proof that people read the stuff in my sidebar, but I have yet to hear from anyone who has noticed the one glaring error.

A little bit of Chicagoiana (new word alert) is being lost now that the street names are announced by a robot voice who says "Gerteh" instead of "Goethee."
