If a man has a gun, or has access to a gun, and says he intends to kill you, you have the right to believe him. That's from one of Louis L'Amour's characters, Tell Sackett if I recall correctly.
Update:
A commenter has been kind enough as to verify the quote, and correct the wording. It should be noted that had the person Tell Sackett was speaking to had taken the message to heart, Louis L'Amour might not have had reason to write the next book in the series.

He said it to Ange Kerry the morning after he brought her off the mountain and shot two men that tried to stop them. She thought it was a "wicked" thing to shoot those men, and Tell told her about his past troubles with Kitch, then he made that statement:
"Ange, when men carry guns, they don't just talk about killing. When a man mentions killing and has in his hands, or on his person, the means to kill, then you have a right to believe that he means to do what he says. I've helped bury a few men that tried to argue at times like that."
